How Do I Know If My Google Business Profile Is Helping Me Show Up in AI Search?
Your Google Business Profile is one of the most powerful tools you have for local AI search visibility, and most local businesses are leaving significant value on the table by not keeping it fully optimized. Here is what to check and why it matters.
Why Google Business Profile Matters for AI Search
Google’s AI Overviews and Gemini AI draw heavily from Google’s own data, including your Business Profile, to generate local recommendations. ChatGPT also cites Google Business Profile data through its browsing capability and through directory sites that pull from it. A complete, accurate, and actively maintained profile significantly increases the chance that AI systems will recommend your business for local searches.
The Most Important Fields to Check Today
Business name, address, and phone number. These must be identical on your Google Business Profile, your website, Yelp, Facebook, and every other directory where your business is listed. Even minor inconsistencies, such as “Street” versus “St.” or a different phone number format, reduce AI systems’ confidence in your data.
Business category. Your primary category is the single most important field in your profile for local search visibility. Make sure your primary category is as specific as possible to your core service, not a generic category. If you clean chimneys, your category should reflect that specifically, not just “Home Improvement.”
Services and descriptions. Google allows you to list specific services under your primary category. Fill out every service you offer with accurate, descriptive names. These services feed directly into AI search results for specific service queries.
Photos. Businesses with recent, high-quality photos are given preference in local search results. AI systems also use photo data as a freshness and activity signal. Aim for at least one new photo per week.
Q and A section. The Questions and Answers section of your Business Profile is often overlooked but feeds directly into AI-generated answers. Add the most common questions your customers ask and answer them accurately yourself. Do not leave this section empty or rely on random people to populate it.
Review recency and response rate. Both the number of reviews and how recently you received them affect your AI visibility. More importantly, the rate at which you respond to reviews signals to Google and to AI systems that your business is active and engaged.
