Why Is Website Traffic Dropping Even Though My Google Ranking Looks Fine?

If your phone used to ring more than it does today, and your Google rankings still look about the same, you are experiencing one of the most common problems local service businesses face right now. The answer almost always has the same cause: AI search.

What Changed in Google Search

Google AI Overviews now appear at the very top of more than 60 percent of search results pages. When someone searches for your service, they often see a direct AI-generated answer before they see any website links at all. The AI answers the question, the user gets what they need, and they never click through to any website including yours.

This is called a zero-click search. Research published in 2025 found that 69 percent of all searches now end without the user clicking any link. Traditional click-through rates dropped by over 60 percent on pages where AI Overviews appear.

Why Your Ranking Still Looks Fine

Your ranking tracks your position in the list of blue links. But if AI answers the question before anyone looks at that list, your rank is irrelevant for that search. The impression count in Google Search Console may still show your page being seen, but it is appearing below an AI summary that already answered the question. The click never comes.

What This Means for Local Service Businesses

For local businesses, there is a critical distinction. AI Overviews and ChatGPT handle research-style questions like “how much does chimney cleaning cost” or “what causes low water pressure.” They are less dominant for direct local intent searches like “chimney cleaning company near me” where Google still shows map results and local listings prominently.

This means your strategy needs two tracks. First, make sure your business appears in those local map pack results for direct service searches. Second, position your website to be cited by AI Overviews for the informational questions that lead customers toward the purchase decision.

The Fix

Structure your website content so the first paragraph of every key page answers the searcher’s question directly. Add FAQ sections to your service pages. Keep your Google Business Profile complete and updated. These changes make your content extractable by AI systems and increase the chance they cite your website in their answers.

Our free assessment checks these signals for your business in about 2 minutes and shows you a prioritized list of what to fix first.
